The Coat & Bear is on the ground floor of a Georgian building with a Grade II* listing. The name of the pub with rooms is a nod to the Newbury-born Michael Bond, author of the beloved character Paddington Bear, as well as the historic Newbury Coat of 1811.

A Heartwood Inn, the pub opened on 29 October 2024.

A report in September 2026 said card payments only, cash not taken.
